Set up tracking and check it each week

The order to set tracking up in: store, agreement and pixel, UTM tags on every channel, the post-purchase survey, then a short weekly check.

3 min readUpdated 7 October 2026

Good tracking means every visit and order is credited to the channel that earned it. Set it up once in this order, then spend five minutes a week checking it still holds.

Before you start

  • A store connects only through the Shopify App Store. See Install Fabrik Analytics from the Shopify App Store.
  • On an agency-managed brand, the agency does the setup and the checks. The Tracking tab says which agency.
  • Pinterest and TikTok cannot be connected. Meta, Google Ads and Klaviyo can.

Part 1: set up, once

1. The store

Install Fabrik Analytics from the Shopify App Store and finish the setup wizard. Your full order history loads on its own, newest first.

2. The agreement and the pixel

  1. Open the brand, then Settings, Tracking.
  2. Under Tracking Status, accept the Data Processing Agreement (step 2). The web pixel registers as soon as it is accepted.
  3. Choose Activate server-side tracking (step 4) so orders and checkouts are captured from Shopify too.
  4. Choose Verify tracking, browse your store for a minute and wait for "Event received, tracking is working."

Detail: Set up the Fabrik pixel and data processing agreement.

3. UTM tags on every channel

Fabrik Analytics reads utm_medium as the channel. Use one medium per channel: paid_search, paid_social, display, affiliate, email, sms, organic_social, referral, organic.

ChannelWhat to do
Google AdsOn the Tracking tab, Read from Google, then Set suffix (agency owner)
MetaCopy the parameters from the Tracking tab into each ad's URL parameters in Ads Manager
KlaviyoSwitch on UTM tracking in your Klaviyo account
Pinterest, TikTok, SnapchatTag each ad's link by hand with utm_medium=paid_social
Affiliates, influencers, SMSTag each link with the matching medium

Detail: Tag your ads and emails with UTMs.

4. The post-purchase survey

Switch on the survey and publish it in Settings, Survey, then add the block to Shopify's Thank you page. Detail: Set up the post-purchase survey.

Part 2: check, every week

CheckWhereHealthy looks like
Tag statusSettings, TrackingGoogle Suffix set, Meta All tagged, Klaviyo UTMs on
PixelSettings, Tracking, Tracking StatusFully Active
Traffic arrivingWebsiteSessions for every day of last week
SyncsIntelligence, Data trust, Sync healthA recent Last completed for each platform
Orders creditedOrders, Order list, then an order's Attribution tabFew recent orders on Direct or Other that should have a channel

A new Meta ad without tags shows up as Untagged on the Tracking tab after the next Meta sync, so this weekly look catches it within days.

Troubleshooting

  • The Website page shows no traffic. See Why does the pixel show no traffic?
  • Lots of orders on Direct. Usually untagged links, or a shopper who declined analytics cookies. Check the tag cards first.
  • Meta shows Old medium, update. The ad still uses an old medium. Paste the current parameters into it.
  • Anything else. Email support@fabrik.ae with the brand and what you see.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect Pinterest or TikTok?

No. Pinterest and TikTok ads cannot be connected, so their spend is not imported. Tag their links with utm_medium paid_social so the visits and orders they bring are still credited to Paid Social.

Do I need to load my order history?

No. Every install has your full order history. Fabrik Analytics loads it after you install from the Shopify App Store, newest first.

Which utm_medium do I use?

The one that names the channel: paid_search, paid_social, display, affiliate, email, sms, organic_social, referral or organic. Old links with cpc, ppc or paid still count as before.

Who sets up tracking on an agency-managed brand?

The agency. Client users see the Tracking tab with the agency named, and can ask their account lead about anything on it.

How do I know orders are being credited properly?

Open a recent order's Attribution tab. It shows the credited channel and the journey behind it. If many recent orders show Direct or Other, check the tags on the Tracking tab.

Is the survey part of tracking?

It complements it. The survey asks buyers where they first heard of you, which catches word of mouth, podcasts and social posts that no tag can see.
