Set up the Fabrik pixel and data processing agreement

Accept the data processing agreement, switch on the Fabrik web pixel and order tracking, and learn what the pixel collects and how long it is kept.

The Fabrik pixel records how shoppers move through your store: page views, collection and product views, add to carts and checkouts. It powers the Website pages, the funnel and the journey behind each order. Order tracking from Shopify's own notifications sits beside it, so every order is captured even when a shopper's browser blocks the pixel.

Before you start

  • Connect your Shopify store first (see "Connect your Shopify store").
  • If you run your brand yourself, the setup wizard's Pixel & Tracking step does the same as Steps 2 and 3 below. Use this page if you skipped it, or to check tracking later.
  • Who can accept the agreement: agency staff, and the owner of a brand that runs itself without an agency. If an agency manages your brand, it records the agreement with you.
  • Who can run these steps: agency staff, and the owner of a brand that runs itself without an agency. A client of an agency-managed brand sees the Tracking tab read-only.

Step by step

  1. Open the brand, then Settings, Tracking.
  2. Scroll to Tracking Status. The badge reads Fully Active, Action Needed or Not Connected, and there are four steps under Setup.
  3. Step 1, Shopify connected is ticked once your store is connected.
  4. Step 2, Data Processing Agreement: tick "I accept the Data Processing Agreement (v1.0) and confirm a lawful basis for tracking", then click Accept DPA. You can read the agreement first from the link in that line.
  5. Accepting registers the web pixel straight away for a connected store. Step 3, Shopify Web Pixel then reads "Active, Fabrik appears under Settings → Customer events". If it does not, click Register web pixel.
  6. Step 4, Order webhooks: click Activate server-side tracking. This captures orders and checkout starts from Shopify. It is not a pixel, so it never counts towards sessions or conversion rate.
  7. Optional: in Verify tracking, click Verify tracking. Your storefront opens in a new tab and the page listens for 60 seconds. Browse a page or two. You should see "Event received, tracking is working."

What the pixel collects

  • Page views, collection views and product views, with the page address and the page that referred the visit.
  • Add to cart, checkout started and checkout completed.
  • The browser language and the visitor's country.
  • Nothing from shoppers who have not allowed analytics in your consent banner.

Orders also carry the campaign tags (UTMs) and click identifiers from the visit, which is how Fabrik Analytics credits a sale to a channel. Street addresses and phone numbers are never stored.

How long it is kept

DataKept for
Browsing events from the pixel90 days
Server-side events from Shopify (orders, checkouts)365 days

The Website pages read hourly figures built from those events.

What you will see

  • Tracking Status shows the time of the last event and the last 24 hours split between web pixel events and order webhooks.
  • The Website page fills in from the first sessions. The current hour appears almost straight away.

Troubleshooting

  • "Accept the DPA to enable tracking." The agreement is not yet accepted. The pixel waits for it.
  • "The store's Shopify authorisation is missing the pixel permissions." Open Fabrik Analytics from Apps in your Shopify admin and approve anything Shopify asks for, then click Re-check.
  • "No events received after 60s." Make sure you browsed the store in the tab that opened, and that you accepted analytics in the consent banner. See "Why does the pixel show no traffic?"
  • "Event counts failed to load" is a problem reading the counts, not a sign tracking stopped. Reload the page.

Frequently asked questions

Why must I accept a data processing agreement before tracking starts?

The pixel processes data about your store's visitors on your behalf, so the agreement must be in place first. The pixel is only switched on once it has been accepted.

Do I need to add any code to my theme?

No. The pixel is a Shopify web pixel, registered through the app connection. It appears in Shopify admin under Settings, Customer events, and runs inside Shopify's own sandbox.

Does the pixel respect cookie consent?

Yes. If a shopper has not allowed analytics in your store's consent banner, the pixel sends nothing for them. This is one reason visit counts can be lower than Shopify's own.

How long is pixel data kept?

Browsing events from the pixel are kept for 90 days. Server-side events from Shopify, such as orders, are kept for 365 days.

Who accepts the agreement if an agency runs my brand?

Your agency records the agreement with you. The Tracking tab names the agency. If it is outstanding, ask your account lead.

What is the High-Value Order Threshold?

A value set by agency staff on the Tracking tab. Paid orders at or above it post a short message to the brand's Slack channel and can raise alerts. Set it to 0 to switch it off.
