Product and stock metrics explained
How stock on hand, stock value, sell-through, out of stock, dead stock, overstock and reorder needed are counted on the Products pages.

The Products pages show what you hold, what it is worth and what is selling through. Stock figures come from your Shopify catalogue and the stock changes Shopify sends; sales figures come from your orders, through the brand's Shopify data filters.
Before you start
- A connected Shopify store with stock tracked on your products.
- Product costs filled in on your products in Shopify for the figures valued at cost.
- The Products pages need a role that can view commerce and a plan that includes them (Growth or higher). Agency staff and brands covered by their agency's plan are never locked.
The figures
| Figure | How it is worked out |
|---|---|
| Units sold | Units on orders placed in the period. |
| Stock on hand | Units on hand across every variant whose stock level is known: the last catalogue sync, moved by each stock change Shopify has sent since. |
| Stock value | Units on hand times retail price, added across variants. |
| Average retail price | The average listed price across variants. |
| Sell-through | For each product, units sold divided by units sold plus units on hand, times 100, then averaged across products. |
| Out of stock | Products whose known stock is zero at the last sync. |
| Dead stock value | Stock at retail on products with stock on hand and no units sold in the period. |
| Overstock at cost | Stock at cost on lines with more than 6 months of cover at the period's rate of sale. Lines with no cost are counted but not valued. |
| Reorder needed | Products whose weeks of cover fall below the lead time in the brand's merchandising settings, among those selling at least 5 units in the period at a sell-through of 15% or more and a positive margin. |
A worked example
Fellwick's waxed jacket sold 60 units in the period and has 40 on hand. Sell-through for that product is 60 divided by 100 = 60%. Its 40 units at a retail price of 200 add 8,000 to stock value.
Step by step: find them
- Open the brand and choose Products. The Overview's tiles show units sold, sell-through, stock value, reorder needed and dead stock value, with their change since the nightly stock snapshots began.
- Choose Stock for the Reorder, Dead stock and Capital tied up lists.
- Choose Sizes to see how each size is selling.
- Choose Catalogue to open any product's record.
Troubleshooting
- Stock looks wrong for a product. Check the product tracks stock in Shopify. Products Shopify does not track are left out of stock figures.
- Overstock shows lines but no value. Those lines have no unit cost in Shopify. Add costs in Shopify and they are valued on the next sync.
