How to read target pace and status

What On track, At risk and Off track mean, how a month in progress is judged on its projected finish, and how quarters, ratios and cost targets are read.

The Targets page shows every target for the financial year, how much has been reached, and whether each period is on course to finish where it should. A period in progress is judged on its projected finish, so you can act before the month ends.

Before you start

  • Targets must be set in the brand's Settings, Financial. See Set monthly targets.
  • The Targets page is under Trading and needs the P&L permission, on a plan that includes Targets and pacing.

Step by step: read the Targets page

  1. Open the brand and choose Trading, then Targets.
  2. Use the arrows beside the year in the command bar to move between financial years.
  3. The four tiles at the top show up to four targets year to date: the figure so far, the change against the target for the same months, and a line of each month's actual with the target dashed behind it.
  4. The chart shows one target against target by month. Choose another target above the chart, or switch to the table view.
  5. The table Targets by period shows every target. For each one it gives rows for Actual, Target and % Achieved. Turn on Variance to add the difference from target.
  6. Use Months, Quarters, Halves, Year or All to choose the columns, Fiscal or Calendar to group by your financial year or the calendar year, and Compact to fit more on screen.
  7. Hover over any cell for its actual, target, projected finish, the forecast method, the variance and the attainment.

What the status means

The colour of each % Achieved figure, and the legend above the table, use three states:

StatusMost targets (higher is better)Cost targets (lower is better)
On trackProjected finish 95% of target or moreProjected finish at or under target
At risk75% to under 95%Up to 15% over target
Off trackUnder 75%More than 15% over target

A closed period is judged on its final actual. A period in progress is judged on its projected finish.

Cost targets include total ad spend, Meta spend, Google spend, COGS, transaction fees, discounts, new customer CPA, cost per purchase and MER %.

How each kind of period is read

  • Closed months show the final actual against the target.
  • The month in progress shows what has arrived so far as % Achieved, while its colour follows the projected finish. The projected finish comes from the stored forecast, and is never lower than what has already arrived.
  • Months not started show the forecast for that month beside the target, labelled Forecast.
  • Quarters, halves and the year count only the months that carry a target, on both sides. The projected finish adds the closed months' actuals, the month in progress at its projected finish, and each month not started at its forecast. Where no forecast is stored, that month counts at its target, and the hover text says so.
  • Year to date counts the closed months and the one in progress against their targets.

Rates and ratios

Blended ROAS, MER, AOV, CPA and the conversion rates are rates, not totals:

  • Their actual over a quarter or year is worked out from that period's own components (for ROAS, the period's sales divided by its spend), never by adding monthly ROAS figures.
  • A quarter's or year's target is the average of the monthly targets that are set.
  • Their projected finish is their rate so far, because a rate does not grow with the days left.

A worked example

Fellwick's net sales target for October is 100,000. On 10 October, 30,000 has arrived.

  • % Achieved shows 30%.
  • The forecast expects 98,000 by month end, which is 98% of target, so October shows On track.
  • If the forecast were 80,000, it would show At risk; at 70,000, Off track.

Where else pace appears

The same targets and projections are read by the Dashboard's pace, Trading, portfolio targets, reports and Intelligence's target findings, so every screen agrees.

Troubleshooting

  • "No targets set for this year": choose Set targets to add them in Settings, Financial.
  • "Targets failed to load": the targets or the year's figures could not be read in full, so nothing is shown rather than a partial answer. Refresh the page; if it persists, email support@fabrik.ae.
  • A tile says "No target": the brand has fewer than four targets. Set more in Settings, Financial.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a month green when it is only at 40% of target?

A month in progress is judged on its projected finish, not on what has arrived so far. If the projection says the month will finish at or above 95% of target, it is On track, even early in the month. The % Achieved figure shows what has arrived so far.

What are the thresholds for On track, At risk and Off track?

For most targets, a projected finish of 95% of target or more is On track, 75% to 95% is At risk, and under 75% is Off track. For cost targets, where lower is better, at or under the target is On track, up to 15% over is At risk, and more than 15% over is Off track.

Why does Q3 only compare two months?

A quarter, half or year counts only the months that carry a target, on both sides. If only August and September have targets, Q3 compares August and September's actuals with their targets and leaves July out.

Why is my quarterly ROAS target not three times the monthly one?

Rates and ratios do not add up. A quarter's ROAS target is the average of its monthly targets, and its actual is worked out from the quarter's own sales and spend, so a 4.00x target each month is a 4.00x target for the quarter.

What does Forecast mean in a future month?

For a month that has not started, the Actual row shows the forecast for that month beside its target. It never assumes a future month will simply hit its target.

Why does MER show green when it is below target?

MER is ad spend as a share of revenue, so lower is better. For MER and other cost targets, coming in at or under target is On track.
